FAQs
-
No, absolutely not. Many of our current pilots had little or no conventional water based sailing experience before starting to land yacht. We can usually get most people moving across the sand quite well within an hour and depending on your ability and commitment you can be racing within a few months.
-
No, not necessarily. We have club yachts which can be hired at minimal cost but these are training yachts. If you get into this sport you will want to buy your own eventually.
-
The smallest training yachts can be acquired for as little as £300 second hand. A Standart can vary between £1200 and £5000 second hand, and £8000 new

You will need some waterproof clothing and an all important helmet. A strong pair of gloves is a must really as you will be pulling quite hard on the rope that pulls the sail in. Other than that warm clothes is a must in the winter months.
-
No, sadly not. We have to consider all other beach users and also the safety of everyone using the beach. This means we are limited in the summer months to May and June in the evenings after 6pm. We can’t use the beach at all in July , August and September. However, the summer tends to have weak winds so it is no great loss that we are limited in the hotter months. Added to this the beach can be so busy that it is dangerous to try and sail while dodging everything from dogs to toddlers.
The best months for us are from October until the end of April when we can sail at any time.
We have use of a stretch of beach which is about half a mile long so there is plenty to play with.

The largest Class 3 yachts which you can see on the end of the video on the membership page can reach over 80mph and the Standarts in excess of 60mph

Landyachting is great for all ages. The youngest you can take part is 12 and there is theoretically no uppper limit . One of the best pilots in the country is now in his eighties!
-
Yes you will require some basic training which we provide in house. You will progress quite quickly through this process and it won’t be long before you will become a qualified Pilot
-
Absolutely you can just sail for fun as we do most weekends. There are several competitions each year, around the country if you feel you want to test yourself so it’s your choice.
