The earliest records of land yachting on Brean sands appear around 1920, when locals sailed for fun, having made yachts from the remains of World War 1 aircraft. 70 years later the Brean Land Yachting
Club is still going from strength to strength.
Since then Brean has produced many fine 'pilots'. Yes, that's what people who sail land yachts are called. It's not a surprising term really, as these wind driven chariots can get up to dizzying speeds. 60mph+ is not unknown!
Yacht Classes
-
Mini Yacht
Mini yachts. These are what you might expect. They are small and lightweight and able to be broken down and loaded in the back of an estate or SUV. As you will see from the photo above they vary in design both in the sail size and shape and the construction of the yachts. As a result pretty much every yacht is unique . They are a very popular class in the North of England and if you are looking for portability and fun in a small package this may be the yacht for you. Build your own or buy second hand from £1000
-
Standart
The Standart( French for Standard) , unlike the other two classes here, is a one-design. This means that none of the components of the yacht can be altered i.e the sail the mast the hull the wheels and axles etc are all identical. This has several advantages not least of which is that everyone is racing on a level playing field and means the biggest wallet doesn’t guarantee a win. This is the main class sailed at Brean and we are the mainstay of the class in the UK. It is car toppable or can be trailered making it very transportable. It’s fast and agile with speeds in excess of 60 mph recorded at Brean Sands. Prices from £1200

Class 3
Class 3 is the big daddy of the classes. These are considerably larger than the Standart and require a trailer to transport them. They are the F1 of the land yachting world, reaching speeds in excess of 80 mph. They come in various shapes and sizes with customisation of the yacht key to helping win races. Not ideal as a first yacht, but an aspiration perhaps. Prices from £2000
